3D-printed camper coming
World-first 3D printing of full-size camper expected to take around two weeksIn what is being touted as a world-first, a Canadian company is planning to be the first to build a full-sized camper trailer using a 3D printer.
In collaboration with Wave of the Future 3D and Saskatchewan Polytechnic, CreateCafe 3D Printing Solutions in Canada plans to print the specially-designed The Wave camper in one piece. When completed it will measure 13ft (4.0m) long and weigh around 270kg.
Unlike other campers, The Wave will feature a 100-year life expectancy, thanks to the recyclable and water and abrasion-resistant PETG material used in the 3D printing process.
Other benefits over traditional campers include a strong one-piece unibody design that will reduce labour costs and be fully customisable including colour, windows, layout, and appliances.
The camper will be printed on a massive 8.5m long x 2.1m wide printer – the largest in North America – using special high-flow printing nozzles that will speed up production time to around 10-14 days.
The plan is to put the camper into production using a faster printing process, with pricing starting around $US25,000.
“This will be the biggest thing printed in (Create Cafe) and will be a world record,” Wave of the Future 3D owner Randy Janes said. “The biggest right now is 82 cubic feet, this will come off at just over 500 cubic feet.”
Janes claims The Wave will be the strongest trailer ever produced. “There’s no seams, there’s no nails, there’s no screws, there’s no wood in the trailer whatsoever.”
The printing process is expected to kick of on February 8 (Canadian time) and you will be able to watch it live on Create Cafe’s Facebook page.
