Volkswagen has upgraded the towing capability of its Amarok V6, which now matches the 3500kg maximum of its key ute rivals.
The 2018 Amarok V6 increases its braked towing capacity from 3000 to 3500kg following a technical upgrade that includes revisions to its rear step set-up and the availability of a genuine 3.5-tonne rated genuine towbar.
There are no changes to the Amarok V6’s class-leading 165kW/550Nm 3.0-litre turbo-diesel, but Volkswagen Australia Commercial Vehicles marketing manager Nick Reid said his team’s “pet project” would further broaden the appeal of the German brand’s one-tonner in a market dominated by the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger.
“We know that Amarok buyers use their vehicle for work and play,” said Reid. “The ability to tow a caravan or a boat is at the very heart of the Amarok, and we’re glad that we’re able to offer this enhancement to our customers, and their weekends.”
Six-cylinder models now account for the majority of Amarok sales in Australia, where an entry-level TDI550 Sportline version was released in August, priced at $55,490 plus on-road costs.
Last month almost 75 per cent of all Amaroks purchased were V6 models and Volkswagen is expected to release more Amarok special-editions soon, perhaps offering even more performance.
While four-cylinder Amarok models continue with a three-tonne braked towing capacity, the 3500kg tow rating applies to all MY18 Amarok V6 models, which are now available for order. Pricing remains unchanged, as follows.
