Some General Grabber all-terrain rubber fitted to a Discovery 3 have proved the ideal fit for touring and general duties

‘General Grabber’ might not be a familiar brand to Aussies, but after being founded in the US back in 1915, the General Tire Co was sold to Germany’s Continental A.G. in 1987 and Continental now distributes Grabbers in Australia.

However if you’re a Land-Rover Discovery owner, as I am, then you’re either wearing their AT or AT2 off-road tyres on your vehicle, or are probably familiar with their range.

I discovered them after they had been recommended to me by three separate Land-Rover dealers and service agent and have since put nearly 20,000km on a set of their latest AT2 All Terrain tyres. This has included both day-to-day running and a 10,000km return trip from Melbourne to the top of Cape York.

I was initially attracted to the Grabbers because I was looking for a suitable 17-inch tyre to fit the new set of Performance alloy wheels I had acquired to give better ‘bushability’ and off-road performance and comfort to my 2008 model Discovery 3 V6 turbo diesel.

I had a choice of 17-inch Grabber sizes to fit them, but went for the 245/70R17s instead of the more common ‘LandCruiser’ light truck size of LT265/70R17 because the 245’s overall diameter almost perfectly matched my factory OE Goodyear Wrangler 255/60R18s.

They fitted beautifully onto the 17 x 8in BB6 Performance Wheels, look like they were made for the D3 and, importantly as I did not want to fit a new rear bumper and swing-away spare wheel mount, slipped into the original under-floor spare wheel well after a very minor modification to its stone shield by Melbourne Land-Rover service specialists, Ritter.

Better still, they’ve proved themselves excellent in every road condition thrown at them. While not pretending to be as grippy in heavy going as a heavily lugged light truck tyre, they have improved the Disco’s off-road traction considerably. Yet they still run relatively quietly on freeways and appear to be about one third worn.

The ride is a little firmer, but still well within the ‘comfort’ range, the steering is no heavier and the fuel consumption, despite the increased ‘drag’ of the more heavily sculptured treat pattern, is little affected.
