Track Trailer unveils new Mate campers
words & photos -
Chris Fincham
Melbourne off-road specialist set to release cut-price, all-in-one trailer for work, rest or play
The manufacturer of one of Australia’s most capable off-road campers is set to introduce a series of budget-priced, multi-purpose trailers aimed at those who want just one trailer to do everything.
Featuring the same MC2 military-grade suspension and rugged chassis design as the company's
highly regarded Tvan campers
, the new four-model ‘Mate’ range is designed as a multi-purpose trailer package that can be used as a workhorse during the week and camper trailer on the week-end.
Designed to be both lightweight and versatile, it comes with a number of interchangeable camping and storage ‘packs’, which when fitted to a universal mounting system, can “be quickly removed and swapped for other packs”, according to the Melbourne company.
Priced at $14,300, the entry-level Base Mate trailer features a powdercoated, galvanised steel tub which at 1223mm wide and 2416mm long, is big enough to carry a quad bike, dirt bikes or other gear.
The off-road package includes a DO-35 coupling, 10inch electric brakes, 15in wheels with off-road tyres (including spare) plus external panniers for carrying jerry cans and toolboxes.
Side and front fixed aluminium extrusions allow for pack upgrades or tie-down points. Tare is 590kg and it has a payload of 910kg.
The stainless steel, fold out kitchen is accessed via the rear-folding tailgate, and features a two gas burner cooktop, storage drawers, and removable plastic sink with hand pump and water connection.
Buyers can create additional storage capacity on the drawbar via a number of options including storage racks, bike racks and a front boot.
The Base Mate can also be converted to a camper trailer via two different rooftop camper options.
Priced from $20,968, the Weekend Mate includes everything on the Base Mate plus drawbar storage and metal stone guards, 105aH battery with three 12V outlets, swing-out kitchen, 70 litre water tank with electric pump, Rhino roof racks and ARB Kakadu roof topper, canvas tent with foam mattress.
The Weekend Mate can also be optioned with a solid top, roof-mounted tent -- the James Baroud Grand Raid Evolution XXL model – which adds another $2000 to the overall price.
Track Trailer had a prototype of the solid top Weekend Mate (pictured) on display at the recent Victorian Caravan, Camping & Touring Supershow, which attracted plenty of spectator interest alongise the company's regular Tvan range.
Track Trailer is also working on a soft-floor, fold-out tent trailer version (called Tour Mate) as well as a tradies’ variant with removable toolbox and storage system (called Trade Mate).
Aimed at families, the Tour Mate soft-floor camper should retail for around $28,000 when it goes on sale in late-2012.
Although still in final testing and development stages, Track Trailer expects production versions of the Base Mate and Weekend Mate trailers to be available from around early-May.
